Clothing for your Portraits

Your professional looking portrait begins with a degree of preparation. The selection of clothing is important. Clothing that does not draw attention away from you is the goal. The difference between a good portrait and a great portrait is attire. Although this is your portrait we would suggest reading through the following guide lines:

Make sure no one item stands out over the other clothing and most importantly when multiple subjects will be in the picture follow a color scheme. We do not encourage Hawaiian shirts or Italian table cloth red and white checker patterns and most of all not both at the same time. (yes, I have taken this picture)

Here are some other helpful suggestions for a great portrait!:

Keep it simple – Clothing should be plain and simple – no patterns, stripes, or anything that will distract.

Selecting colors – you want to match the other people in your group. Use the same color or the same tonal values. Contrast dark and light, Light. White shirts or blouses under a dark jacket are great.

Outside Portraits – Wear earth tones, solid colors are best for all portraits. Unless your shooting fashion photography to showcase the clothing. For a more casual look, denim looks great, or dark cotton slacks and shirt with the same tonal value.

Family Formal Portrait – For studio portraits, we usually recommend medium to deep tones. Match other people in the group. Medium to dark slacks and skirts, dark shoes, and darker stockings are usually best. This makes a more pleasing portrait for your home think of matching your decor. What room will the portrait be displayed in.

Be sure the neck of the shirt fits perfectly and is not frayed. Schedule a haircut three days prior to your appointment to allow your hair to return to a natural look. a brand new haircut can look unnatural.

Some other things to think about

Let the photographer know of any special concerns you have about your poses or expressions before you are photographed.

Hair style – Wear your hair in your usual style. Don't try a new hairstyle or haircut just before your portrait.

Complexion – Don't worry about normal blemishes or flaws in your complexion. All finished portraits are retouched to eliminate these imperfections.

Make up – Girls should keep their makeup natural.

Shave – For the men, a close shave within a few hours of your appointment is a must.

Accessory Items – Be sure to bring any items you want to include in the photo with you such as your guitar or any sports equipment or other accessories.

Sleep and rest – Get plenty of rest the night before your appointment. Wake up well before the appointment so you will look your best and not be rushed.

Pets – We love them as much as you do, lets get them involved too.

Relax, Relax, Relax – there is nothing to be nervous about.
